Couples therapy is a therapeutic process that aims to revise and improve a relationship. Both partners in person attend sessions of one and a half hours weekly or biweekly, creating the space to talk and listen to each other through the intermediation of the therapist, and find joint solutions to improve the relationship or to renegotiate the terms thereof.
The aim of the process is primarily to improve communication between the couple, the expression of feelings and needs of each, as well as the relationship, and awareness of the situation and the roles performed with each other. Techniques for conflict resolution are also applied.
For the process to develop, a strong commitment is essential from the two components. Sometimes it is recommended that either or both of them also start individual therapy. The process is usually accompanied by exercises to be performed by both in the time between sessions.
